An excellent Grade 1 waterfall scramble in fabulous scenery near Nusfjord on Flakstadøya in Lofoten, Norway. This guide shows how to find the route and what to expect as you climb through a series of cascades.

Route in: park at Nusfjord, walk past Vika and round the coastal path heading south then west towards Auster Nesland

Start point: enter Mosedalen beck where it meets the coastal path (around lat, long: 68.02739, 13.33272); you can recognise it as you’ll see the waterfalls above on the mountainside

Grading: it is largely grade 1 scrambling; anything more difficult can be worked around

Notes: I only discovered later from the free Norway map https://ut.no/kart that the beck is in Mosedalen; as shown in the video, where the beck splits, consider taking the left fork

Warning: in the higher reaches, the beck is very slippery and not good scrambling; the weather can be severe in northern Norway and can change very rapidly: check https://www.yr.no/en

End point: once you are no longer enjoying the scramble in the upper sections of the beck (see video for further information)

Route out: you can retrace your steps going down beside the beck and then follow the coastal path back, or find the upper path that leads back to Vika (c. 68.02843, 13.31532)

Time: about 30 mins from CP to start point; then up to 1 hour of scrambling; then just over 30 mins to walk back

Combine with: more high-octane ghyll scrambles in Vedvikdalen, west of Mosedalen

Gear: drybag recommended, wetsuit helpful especially in cold conditions

Verdict: an excellent scramble up waterfall after waterfall in the lower section with fabulous views; less good in the upper half which is quite slippery

Category: Standard scramble

Score: 7.5/10
