A short scramble up Fair Brook Gully that splits off from Fair Brook, which flows down from the North side of the Kinder Plateau into the River Ashop, South of the old Snake Inn. Summary verdict: a quick, fun grade 1 scramble with lots of different ways up plus easy escape routes
Route in: park at Birchin Clough lay-by on the A57. Take the footpath directly South to the River Ashop; ford the river and clamber up onto the Woodlands Valley path: take this East until you get to Fair Brook and then walk up the path North of Fair Brook. You can also try a few closer parking spots along the A57 South-East of old Snake Inn
Start point: where Fair Brook Gully splits off South from Fair Brook at OS ref SK 09843 89456
Grading: after a walk upwards, it’s a grade 1 dry scramble from just beneath the Kinder Plateau fence. Further details in the “Scrambles in the Dark Peak” book, where this is scramble no.26
End point: where the Gully peters out a little way before you reach the Seal Edge path
Route out: West along the Seal Edge path until it meets the Fair Brook path, though you can shortcut before that into Fair Brook. Then retrace your steps
Time: about 75 mins from CP to start point; then about 25 mins up; then about 65 mins to walk back down
Verdict: not worth the trip just for the gully but can easily be combined with Fair Brook scramble, the Red Brooks along Ashop Edge, or maybe the Seal Cloughs
