Scrambling up the River Sprint in Longsleddale in the eastern Lake District.  Summary verdict: a really good, challenging scramble though a bit of a pain to get to.

Route in: park at road junction just before Sadgill in Longsleddale (note it’s just over 5 miles along a single track road to get to Sadgill from the A6)

Start point: enter the River Sprint where it starts to cascade around OS Ref NY 47894 07333

Grading: there are two or three waterfalls that are insurmountable without a rope but a couple of very satisfying grade 1.5/2 falls and a lot of grade 1 small falls and cascades plus plenty of dip, swim and dive pools

End point: where the “river” (now just a stream) crosses the main path up to Gatescarth Pass around OS ref NY 47866 08307

Route out: walk back down to the parking spot via the main path

Time: 30 mins from parking to start point; then 1.5-2 hours up the Sprint; then about 45 mins to walk back

Combine with: Wren Gill

Gear: wet scramble gear including buoyancy vest (pools are up to 9 feet deep) and helmet advised for waterfall scrambles

Verdict: continuous scrambling with a couple of perfect waterfall challenges for a Grade 1 scrambler, and plenty of cascades and pools to enjoy.  Marked down due to the hassle of the drive there and back, and a lot of very greasy surfaces

Score: 7/10
